Kevin Morby - Little Wide Open (ecomix)

Kevin Morby returns with Little Wide Open, his eighth studio album and the latest chapter in a loose trilogy that began with Sundowner and This Is a Photograph. Rooted in his Midwestern upbringing, the record reflects on landscape, memory and the uneasy beauty of wide-open spaces — where cicadas hum, trains pass and tornado sirens cut through the sky.

Produced by Aaron Dessner at Long Pond Studio in New York, the album pairs Morby’s plainspoken songwriting with expansive, finely detailed arrangements. A cast of contributors including Amelia Meath, Andrew Barr, Justin Vernon, Katie Gavin, Lucinda Williams and Meg Duffy adds depth and texture, while Dessner’s multi-instrumental presence keeps the focus firmly on the songs.

Now based in Los Angeles, Morby writes with a sense of movement rather than nostalgia. Where earlier records dwelled on holding onto the past, Little Wide Open feels more at ease with time’s forward pull — reflective, assured and open-hearted, with echoes of classic American songwriting in its sweep and scale.
