Cat Power’s The Greatest finds Chan Marshall recording in Memphis with key players from the city’s soul lineage. Guitarist Mabon ‘Teenie’ Hodges, co-writer of Al Green staples, leads a seasoned backing band including Leroy ‘Flick’ Hodges and drummer Steve Potts, alongside a cast of local musicians on horns, keys and strings.

Drawing on the feel of 70s Hi Records, the album folds rich arrangements and understated grooves into Marshall’s songwriting. Tracks move between hushed reflection and gentle swing, from the drifting pull of ‘Lived in Bars’ to the gospel-tinged ‘Living Proof’. Elsewhere, ‘Willie’ and ‘Where Is My Love’ echo her earlier, stripped-back approach, while the title track lingers with a soft, spectral glow.

A quietly assured record that channels Memphis soul through Marshall’s distinct voice.
