Straight Edge has endured for decades as a drug-free hardcore punk culture. However, its political legacy is often ambiguously associated with a self-referential, macho posturing and conservative puritanism. While some elements of Straight Edge culture feed into this perception, the movement's political history is far more complex.

From Straight Edge's origins in Washington, D.C., in the early 1980s, individuals, bands, and entire scenes around the world have linked it to radical thought and activism. A Sober Life for Revolution traces this history.

This includes contributions – in the form of in-depth interviews, essays and manifestos – from a large number of artists and activists with links to Straight Edge, from Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi) to Dennis Lyxzén (Refused/The (International) Noise Conspiracy) or other musical bands, to feminist projects (Emancypunx), sexual and gender dissident activists, to radical collectives such as CrimethInc or others dedicated both to sober living and to the struggle for a better world.
