Strut offers an in-depth look into the world of Quatermass Sound Lab, the prolific East London studio founded and run by producer, engineer, and co-founder of The Heliocentrics, Malcolm Catto.

Over the past two decades, Catto has quietly established himself as one of the most sought-after sound architects in contemporary music. Admired for his analog approach, he built Quatermass Sound Lab around vintage equipment, tube preamps, and live performances, creating warm and timeless recordings. Inspired by punk, hip-hop, psychedelic rock, jazz, funk, and electronic music, Catto has developed a production style that rejects genre boundaries in favor of instinct and atmosphere. His discography includes collaborations with Yussef Dayes, DJ Shadow, Madlib, Quantic, Mulatu Astatke, Orlando Julius, Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, and many others.

This collection opens the Quatermass archive for the first time, bringing together unreleased recordings, alternate versions, and mixes that trace Catto's evolution as a producer, drummer, and sonic instigator. It includes abrasive post-punk electronic music, experiments with French rap, richly textured psychedelia, jazz and global sounds, hidden gems, and a selection of unreleased recordings, alternate versions, and archival material.
