Timbila Ta Venâncio - Ecos Do Legado

Timbila Ta Venâncio are the sons of celebrated Chopi musician Venâncio Mbande, performing his compositions on the wooden xylophones known as timbila.

Ecos do Legado (Echoes of the Legacy) was recorded in Mozambique and follows the traditional sequence of an interconnected song cycle. Five types of xylophone, ranging from huge bass instruments to higher registers, create dense layers of rhythm and unusual microtonal tuning. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Chopi timbila tradition remains central to community life in Zavala. Fans of Konono No. 1 and Steve Reich should investigate.
