This Mortal Coil – Blood

Blood (1991) is the third and final album by British collective This Mortal Coil, conceived by Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer under the 4AD label.

This double LP features a wide range of guest vocalists, including Caroline Crawley, Kim Deal, Tanya Donnelly, Heidi Berry, and sisters Deirdre and Louise Rutkowski. The tracklist blends radically reinterpreted covers of songs by Chris Bell, Gene Clark, Syd Barrett, Rodney Crowell, Spirit, Rain Parade, and Mary Margaret O’Hara with original compositions marked by ethereal textures, chamber-like arrangements, and sombre electronic layers. Widely regarded as the most cohesive and polished entry in the This Mortal Coil trilogy, Blood closes the project with a deeply melancholic and introspective sonic atmosphere, cementing its status as a defining expression of the 4AD sound at the turn of the century.
