Released in September 2004, American Idiot is Green Day’s seventh album and a punk rock opera following the story of Jesus of Suburbia, a disillusioned suburban youth.

Produced by Rob Cavallo, it combines punk and alternative rock with a cohesive narrative critiquing post‑9/11 America and the Iraq War. It spawned hit singles like American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Jesus of Suburbia. Selling over 23 million copies worldwide, reaching number one in numerous countries, and winning the 2005 Grammy for Best Rock Album, it marked a major comeback and cultural milestone for the band.
