In today's political language, "democracy" designates an empty signifier, all the more consensual the emptier it is, the more unquestioned its concept or substance, a kind of universal secular religion. The philosophical-political problem of our time is not the critique of capitalism, on which everyone more or less agrees. It is the critique of the democracy they sell us, the only one they tell us we have a right to, as a regime of power inseparable from the dominant capitalist reality and the ideal, and also the most cynical, mode of socio-political legitimation of that reality. A critique aware that the solution to the increasingly dramatic problems of humanity raised by global capitalism, to the present pre-apocalyptic state of the world, does not lie in this democracy.
