The title of the first study in this book, Herberto Helder Audio/Visual, may seem a bit strange. However, it closely follows Herbertian poetics in his thinking about poetry between image and voice, and in dialogue with arts such as cinema, painting, music, dance, sculpture and even photography.

If we can conceive of various understandings of the image in poetry - on the iconic plane, on the rhetorical and figural plane, or from the ecphrastic and intermedial point of view - it will be difficult to conceive of a poetry that does without the image. Poetry either explores the image from a rhetorical point of view, in articulation with metaphor and the verbal construction of images directed to the mind's eye, or seeks this articulation on the plane of the materialities of the communicative process (printed page, video, film, performance, etc.), or makes the image appear by reference to specific visual and audiovisual creations, or to notionally evoked visual arts.

This leads to different ways of using intermediality as a support for the relations between word and image, and also to a thought about the emergence of voice and image in poetry. These are questions addressed in the essay that opens this book and which then permeate much of the other studies.
