Oscar Wilde - O Retrato de Dorian Gray (ed. bilingue)

    21.30€

Dorian Gray is a handsome young man portrayed by the artist Basil Hallward in a painting. More than just a model, he becomes Basil's true inspiration, as his entire inner self is exposed in his masterpiece. Through his association with Lord Henry, a cynical and hedonistic aristocrat, Dorian is seduced into a world of beauty and immediate, irresponsible pleasures, a spirit intensified after finally seeing his finished portrait and falling in love with himself. The handsome young man, unlike human nature, mysteriously preserves his youthful physical features while others age and suffer the marks of time.

The novel's plot sparked great controversy in Victorian England in the late 19th century due to its indifferent behavior, its central theme of Aestheticism, and the duality of the main character: a hedonistic, selfish, and conservative young man who calmly attends gatherings of high English society after committing numerous crimes. Originally published in the American periodical Lippincott’s Magazine in 1890, this is the original version now published in a previously unpublished bilingual edition, with its thirteen original chapters and without the later alterations of 1891, made by the author himself, which softened the plot.

This annotated and illustrated bilingual edition, translated by Doris Goettems and adapted for Portugal by Ana Sofia Saldanha, recovers the work in its original form and offers the public the denser, more explicit, and controversial 1890 version of Oscar Wilde's novel.

It also features the illustrations by Eugene Dété (1848-1922) and Paul Thiriat (1900-1918) for the first illustrated edition of 1910.
