The IÉ-IÉ generation had style, great self-esteem, was very vulnerable to the appeal of new, even revolutionary ideas, and, of course, was very sensitive and drawn to freedom of choice and expression.

I remember the smell of vinyl, of Valentim de Carvalho, the covers of EPs and LPs, Salut Les Copains, the despair I felt when my first 78 rpm record of Bill Haley, which I had even listened to on a cheap gramophone, broke into pieces. The parties and gatherings, the romances, the excitement and spontaneous, healthy fun—all of that with “our” music as the backdrop and unifying element.
