Verne, the author who rarely left his native France – except for visits to the United States, a short trip to the United Kingdom, and a visit to Portugal – wrote about the whole world through reports from his colleagues at the Geographical Society and the French Academy; in this case, the "consultant" was the great patriarch of Russian letters, Ivan Turgenev, who was then living in France.
