This book brings together a collection of texts on the themes of ethnicity, racism, nationalism, and ethnic minorities. The first part begins with a critical review of various theories on racism, followed by a socio-anthropological and historical reflection on the connections between racism and nationalism. This multidimensional, multi-level theoretical reflection then focuses on the intersections between ethnicity and class, the role of stereotypes, and various expressions of racism in modernity. The second part analyzes the phenomenon of migration, the inequalities that accompany the migrant condition, and reflects on the contours of ethnicity and cultural hybridity in the Portuguese (post)colonial context. Next, the processes of discrimination and stigmatization faced by Roma people are addressed, paying special attention to the school context. Finally, the school performance of children from native and immigrant families in Portugal and Catalonia is comparatively discussed.
