If there is one process that most needs to be understood and interpreted in the cultural and artistic sphere today, it is digitization. This is demanded by the radical changes that have been stimulating and reconfiguring the making of art, the artistic ethos, and also the modes of dissemination and the very relationship of individuals with works of art. It was these transformations, accelerated by a computer network that gained global reach at the dawn of the 21st century, that first highlighted, for the organizers of this book, the importance of promoting reflection on the connection between digital technology, culture, and the arts.
This work presents thirteen chapters that comprise a multidisciplinary approach structured around four thematic cores. In it, the reader can find critical essays on the conditions of production, dissemination, and incorporation of new information and communication technologies; case studies on the migration of artistic legacies, such as those of the poet Fernando Pessoa and the painter António Dacosta, to the digital environment; analyses of digitization initiatives of renowned Portuguese cultural institutions, such as the National Library of Portugal and the Portuguese Cinematheque-Museum of Cinema; Empirical research on how individuals integrate digital media into reading and other social practices. The book is aimed at all readers interested in the fields of social sciences, cultural studies, communication sciences, literary studies, and digital humanities.
