The subject of study of this work focuses on events – namely, some significant collective exhibitions, artists, artworks, underlying cultural policies, institutions, art education, specialized periodicals, theoretical and critical debates, as well as a connection to the international backdrop.

It is through the critical analysis of the intersection of these elements that this history of art in Portugal positions itself. Although the times and intensity of Portuguese art were not always the same as those of Western art – specifically from the most prominent artistic centers such as the United States, France, Germany, Italy, or the United Kingdom – the exhibitions in question and certain individual paths manage to go beyond the more or less common belief in a certain imported style – particularly when referring to the Portuguese 1970s – proposing the hypothesis of a necessary re-evaluation of the history of art in Portugal during the period under analysis, making it an effectively integral part of the broader movement in the history of Western art.
