Émile Zola the short story writer—his moments as a novelist on vacation—proves excellent at securing, within the space constraints imposed by newspapers, and with great effectiveness, all the effects he imagined for a story. He did this in different moods. We find him romantic, dramatic, comic, fantastical, far removed from the naturalism of his central works, and often soliciting from us that "voluntary suspension of disbelief" that Coleridge cited as essential to the maximum enjoyment of certain literary works.
