This novel tells the story of Jacinto, a young Portuguese man from a wealthy family, who lives in Paris surrounded by all the luxuries, the latest scientific discoveries, and the most modern technology.

Everything around him is "overflowing with Civilization," but his dissatisfaction and boredom are constant. Until he decides to go to Tormes, the birthplace of his ancestors. For the journey from the French capital to the Portuguese province, dozens of crates and suitcases are prepared, but unexpectedly he arrives with nothing. This chance encounter allows him to experience the simple things in life, and a profound change occurs: deprived of material possessions, his human side flourishes, and Jacinto becomes a different person.

This edition features a careful revision, updating, and standardization of the text, respecting the new spelling agreement, and is enhanced by a preface by the writer José Jorge Letria.
