"Exile and the Kingdom" is a collection of six stories by Albert Camus set in locations as diverse as Europe, Brazil, and Africa.

However, a single theme runs through them all: exile, explored here from interior monologue to realistic description.

"The Kingdom, in turn, which is also referred to in the title," explains Camus, "coincides with a certain free and unadorned life that we must rediscover in order to finally be reborn.

Exile, in a way, shows us the paths to this other life, provided we know how to simultaneously reject servitude and possession."

Originally published in 1957, a few months before Camus received the Nobel Prize in Literature, this volume was the last literary work published during the author's lifetime.
